“Reflections on Staying On: My Journey with Weskus” – Jadee Arendse
You’re staying on at Weskus after your 2024 internship? How does that make you feel?
Staying on at Weskus after 2024 brings a mix of emotions for me. I’m excited to continue contributing to meaningful work, especially knowing how important disaster management is for our communities. It’s a confidence boost to know my efforts are valued, but it also comes with a bit of pressure-I’ll need to keep up the momentum and meet the responsibility that comes with this role. I feel proud, eager, and maybe just a little nervous.
What will you be doing, and where will you be working?
I’ll be continuing as a call taker and dispatcher at the West Coast Disaster Management Centre, which is a role I’ve grown passionate about.
What are the most important things the internship taught you?
Through my internship, I’ve learned to make quick, effective decisions under pressure, especially in crisis situations where prioritizing and clear communication is critical. I’ve also gained experience in collaboration, working with different agencies and community groups to coordinate efforts and share information. Most importantly, I’ve learned the value of adaptability-plans can change rapidly during a disaster, and being flexible is key to managing those challenges.
