The new regional landfill between Vredendal and Vanrhynsdorp was a historic moment and illustrative of visionary leadership.
Weskus Distrik Municipality, and the Cederberg and Matzikama local municipalities and other role players have engaged for some years about an ambitious but needed regional landfill facility.
Once the planning had been completed, the Weskus Distrik’s action-led characteristic came to the fore and the project became reality. Officials from Weskus Distrik Municipality, Matzikama Local Municipality, Cederberg Local Municipality, Western Cape government, and the Department of Environmental Affairs and Development celebrated the official start of construction.
The Executive Mayor of Weskus Distrik “Boffie” Strydom acknowledged the contribution of predecessors who initiated the project and thanked the project partners who had worked tirelessly to make it happen.
“I am very proud to be able to live this moment today. Through effective refuse removal in the region, this landfill site will help to improve the wellbeing of the region. My wish is that this Landfill site will contribute to the energy recycling production in the future as well and that all operations will be cost-effective”.
