West Coast residents and visitors are blessed with magnificent sunsets, endless beaches, breathtaking water sports, mouthwatering seafood dishes, diverse vineyards and the rugged Cederberg mountains. The region is also growing as a sought-after film production space and St Helena Bay sits comfortably in the upper quartile of preferred semigration towns.
“What one tends to overlook is that all of this would mean less if the local municipalities were not performing as they should. We’ve seen how other areas – arguably with as much to offer as we have – have declined markedly due to infrastructural problems. You don’t want to spend money on a holiday and encounter rubbish piling up in the street or contend with poor water quality.
We inherited much of what we, and our visitors, love about the West Coast but ensuring that we can enjoy it to the fullest did not happen by chance. It is the result of our five local municipalities and the district municipality doing their jobs consistently well”.
Most of the West Coast municipalities are consistently among South Africa’s top performers, with exemplary governance and visionary leadership as hallmarks.
The municipalities also work together to ensure that what we have on the west coast is sustainable. The recent Weskus Conversations conference held at Club Mykonos is a prime example of teamwork. The political and administrative leaders converged to uncover areas where greater collaboration could lift the region further, not taking what we have for granted.
“We are exceptionally proud of what the Weskus offers in terms of natural beauty and opportunities but we’re equally proud of the local government’s leadership and drive to ensure that what we offer is sustainable and grows. Recently the West Coast District Municipality changed its tourism strategy to place a stronger focus on destination marketing. Through innovative marketing strategies, our tourism destination marketing team, in partnership with local the local municipalities and the Regional Tourism Organisation, will ensure that the Weskus remain one of the preferred tourist destinations in South Africa”.
