The West Coast region is preparing for a significant influx of holidaymakers as it continues to cement its reputation as one of South Africa’s most sought-after tourism destinations. Stretching from Yzerfontein in the Swartland to Brand se Baai on the Northern Cape border, the West Coast offers visitors a unique mix of coastal beauty, seafood, winelands, culture and heritage.
According to Nomonde Ndlangisa, Chief Executive Officer of Bergrivier Tourism, visitor numbers have already increased with the start of the school holidays. “We are seeing a steady flow of visitors, especially to camping sites in the Bergrivier area. The N7 and the R27 (West Coast Road) are particularly busy as holidaymakers make their way to the region to enjoy West Coast hospitality,” she said.
In response to the increased visitor numbers, the West Coast District Municipality, in partnership with key law enforcement and safety agencies, has activated comprehensive festive season safety plans. Speaking at the launch of the West Coast Festive Season Safety Campaign, Executive Mayor Alderman Boffie Strydom highlighted the importance of collaboration. “The festive season presents an opportunity to showcase our tourism offerings, but visitor safety remains our top priority. We thank our partners in SAPS, municipal law enforcement, provincial traffic services, NSRI, Fire and Rescue, Emergency Medical Services, Disaster Management and all safety agencies who will be on duty to ensure a safe holiday experience,” said Mayor Strydom.
Head of Destination Marketing at the West Coast District Municipality, Heinrich Robertson, emphasized the importance of sustainable tourism. “The West Coast is no longer only a seasonal destination. Visitor numbers are increasing throughout the year, and tourism plays a vital role in the local economy. We are also seeing growing interest from visitors investing in property in the region, which further strengthens the Weskus economy,” he said.
Over the past weekend, holidaymakers were welcomed during a friendly roadblock in Lamberts Bay, where tourism officials and law enforcement officers handed out welcome packs featuring Weskus products, a festive events calendar, must-do activities and essential safety tips.
While accommodation and camping availability is limited due to early bookings, the West Coast remains an ideal destination for day trips. Visitors are encouraged to explore and experience the best the West Coast has to offer this festive season.
