“Reflections on Staying On: My Journey with Weskus” – Waronique Morris
You’re staying on at Weskus after your 2024 internship? How does that make you feel?
It feels incredibly exciting to stay on after my internship! I’m so grateful for the opportunity to continue growing and contributing to the important work we do. This extension feels like a reward for my efforts and a chance to build on everything I’ve learned so far. It’s motivating to know that my skills and dedication have been recognized, and I’m eager to see how I can make an even greater impact in the year ahead.
What will you be doing, and where will you be working?
I’ll be working as a Call Taker and Dispatcher at the West Coast Disaster Management Centre, focusing on capturing and managing a variety of emergency calls. It’s a vital role that requires clear communication and quick thinking, and I’m excited to take on more responsibilities as l grow in this position. This role has taught me the importance of being calm and focused under pressure, and I’m looking forward to refining those skills even further.
What are the most important things the internship taught you?
The internship has been an invaluable experience that has taught me so much. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is the importance of teamwork. Working closely with others in high-pressure situations showed me how essential collaboration is to achieving success, especially in disaster management.
I’ve also developed stronger communication skills, learning how to convey information clearly and effectively, even in stressful situations. This skill has been key in ensuring that emergencies are managed efficiently. Overall, the internship has been a journey of growth, pushing me out of my comfort zone and giving me the tools I need to thrive in this field. I’m incredibly thankful for everything I’ve learned and look forward to applying these lessons as I continue my journey with Weskus.
