Don’t walk over work

Councillor Miranda Schrader oversees Weskus Distrik’s vital Infrasdtructure portfolio. She is also Saldanha Bay Municipality’s Ward Councillor for Hopefield. Her attitude to her work and life in general is best described by the saying ” Don’t walk over work”.

Roughly translated, this means that if you see something needs to be done, do it!

This is pretty much the Weskus way.

Her dedication to service delivery was inculcated in her early career in the pharmaceutical sector. “If a doctor or hospital urgently needed medication for patients, you made a plan to get it to them on time”.

What makes Weskus Distrik a special place to work?

“A culture where opinions matter and we are free to express ourselves. Integration is also important, including the way that the administrative and political arms work together. Overall, it’s about a common desire to make a difference”.

As an olive and rooibos farmer, Miranda has a special affection for the agricultural sector.

“Apart from water, roads and energy, farmers don’t ask for much. Our road construction and maintenance projects are geared to getting our farmer’s projects to market safely, we have an outstanding team managing our water function, and our PV solar plant initiative contributes to providing energy.”

Miranda is an alternative thinker and the recent launch of an ambitious landfill site in the region got her thinking.

“Why can’t we use plastic waste for road construction?”
