On hearing that Weskus Distrik was present at a recent conference, a young delegate was heard to remark with great enthusiasm: “Wow! They’re the benchmark!!” This was flattering but Municipal Manager David Joubert puts this in context.
“We have an excellent record of clean governance and service delivery.
But it goes beyond that.
At a time of dysfunctional service delivery, we must inspire others to deliver by setting an example and showing what’s possible.
We are not rock stars – we are good, qualified, and committed people with a passion for service delivery.
Our team consistently goes beyond what is expected of them.
As our Executive Mayor Boffie Strydom says, now is not the time to sleep!
And we know that we must never believe in our own publicity.
Or dwell on our successes.
Because if we slip, heads drop at a time when South Africans seek hope.
Weskus Distrik – and the other municipalities that can also be counted as benchmarks – have a bigger role to play in South Africa than imagined.
We represent a beacon of hope, and we must embrace that responsibility”.
