Weskus Distrik’s second woman to achieve an Honours Degree.

Melvina Oppelt, Weskus Distrik’s Chief Clerk: Payroll, completed her Bachelor of Administration Honors Degree in Public Administration (University of the Western Cape), only the second woman to get an honours degree at the municipality.

She joined Weskus in 2012 as a creditors clerk before becoming Payroll Clerk in 2016.

Melvina, apart from technical knowledge, what else did you learn from your studies?

The importance of planning. As a housewife, I had to find the time and put in extra effort. And my communication skills have improved, and I can now present, write, talk and think in English. I also learned new methodologies, techniques and strategies and I am now far more effective.

How challenging was it to get your honours?

I faced challenges such as paying for travel costs to the University of the Western Cape in Bellville; finding the funds for a laptop to attend remote classes, and my daughter needing to stay elsewhere while I was on campus. Getting home late and then working on assignments until the early hours of the morning, and then leaving at 05h30 was exhausting.

There were sacrifices to be made but I am a stronger and better person today. It was worth it!

What encouragement would you give to colleagues to study further and grow?

I will mention several words of encouragement:

  • Don’t let your struggles, battles or challenges hold you back.
  • Stand up for yourself – help is available if you seek it, but it’s up to you.
  • A skilled person has greater vision and can spot opportunities.
  • Don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone.
  • You will develop a sense that nothing is impossible, that the sky’s the limit.

Melvina, congratulations not only on your achievement but for having the determination to overcome any obstacles presented, and winning!
