The calm behind the storm.

In the fast-paced, high-pressure world of Disaster Management, not every hero wears a uniform or stands in the spotlight. Some quietly keep operations running, gear prepped, vehicles ready, and field teams supported—and Damian Smit is one of those people.

Damian is a Disaster Management Assistant at Weskus Distrik’s Disaster Management Centre. His role is as vital as it is varied—from vehicle readiness and equipment checks to setting up operations in the field and supporting on-site response efforts.

“I’m not always the one out front, but I make sure everything behind the scenes runs smoothly so that the team can focus on saving lives and protecting the public.

“You need to be steady because every day brings something new. I’ve learned how to work fast, think clearly, and always double-check everything.

“In Disaster Management, small mistakes can become big problems. I treat every checklist seriously and take pride in making sure everything is structured and in place.

“I’ve been part of operations where tension is high, but my job is to stay calm and create structure”.
