Held in Moorreesburg, government officials, agricultural stakeholders and community members addressed rural safety challenges and explore collaborative solutions for the region.
Weskus Distrik’s Executive Mayor Alderman Boffie Strydom emphasised the municipality’s commitment to fostering partnerships which can enhance rural safety across the district.
Western Cape Government MEC for Agriculture, Dr Ivan Meyer, provided insight on rural safety initiatives and the Growth for Job Strategy, highlighting provincial priorities which align with the agricultural sector’s needs in the West Coast.
MEC for Police Oversight and Community Safety, Anroux Marais, presented an overview on various strategies to strengthen farm watch capacities through collaboration between SAPS, municipalities and farm watches and also gifted a drone to the West Coast District Municipality Disaster Management Centre. This technological contribution will significantly enhance the municipality’s surveillance and emergency response capabilities.
“The drone donation represents a substantial advancement in our disaster management infrastructure,” said Weskus District’s Director Wilhelm Markus during his closing remarks. “This technology will enable faster response times and improved situational awareness during emergencies across our district.”
Jannie Strydom, CEO Agri-Wes Kaap, provided valuable observations about agriculture’s contribution to the West Coast economy, while highlighting both challenges and opportunities within the sector.
The meeting also featured important contributions from Jacobus van Litsenburg, who addressed community safety initiatives and Fire Chief Bertus Senekal, who outlined fire service capabilities across the district.
This collaborative approach to rural safety underscores Weskus District’s commitment to safeguarding both agricultural interests and community wellbeing across the West Coast region.
