Highlights: Living our brand values.

Apart from its mission and purpose, Weskus Distrik also has four distinct brand values of Solid, Active, Aspirational and Inclusive. Examining highlights presented at the Executives Mayor’s Budget Speech, Municipal Manager David Joubert explores the relationship with our brand values.

Highlights presented were:

  • The first “Mayor’s Conversation” conference, with impact-driven insights shared by the region’s municipal leaders (Solid, Inclusive, Active, Inclusive).
  • Despite national challenges, Weskus continues to pay all staff salaries and benefits in full (Solid, Inclusive).
  • Weskus Distrik’s 14th Clean Audit (following acknowledgement at “Best Run Municipality 2023), a testament to effective governance and operational excellence ( Solid, Aspirational, Inclusive, Active).
  • Weskus Distrik as one of only two district municipalities permitted to negotiate a new roads delivery model, effective April 2026 (Solid, Aspirational, Active).
  • Regional landfill site set to become operational this year, supporting environmental sustainability (Inclusive, Solid, Active).
  • A focus on identifying future business opportunities to attract new revenue sources and sustain financial health (Solid, Aspirational, Active, Inclusive).
  • Youth development through a R4 million Call Centre, in partnership with Solvem Consulting and the Western Cape Department of Economic Development and Tourism (Solid, Aspirational, Inclusive, Active).
  • The first district municipality to launch a comprehensive branding strategy which reaches key investment, business and government audiences (Aspirational, Solid, Active, Inclusive).
  • Weskus remains the only district municipality with a Water Concession Function (Solid, Aspirational, Active).

Providing context, our brand values are based around:
Solid – effective governance. In fact, everything that we do is “solid” as it is compliant and well-considered.
Active – the drive to not sit on things but make it happen. As our Executive Mayor says: “Saying well done is better than saying well said!”

Aspirational – symbolically, this brand value refers to giving hope to South Africans but functionally, it talks to developing and growing our people. With this, being innovative and open-minded. We have a vision for our residents, investors, people, and our region.

Inclusive – Initially, this brand value spoke to the diverse nature of the Weskus team and residents. It has extended naturally to the way that we embrace key suppliers and stakeholders as partners. Partnerships between the private and public sectors are vital.

“I’m not sure that many municipalities are brand-driven to the fullest extent. But our brand is authentic and real – there’s no brand perception; it is who we are and what we believe in. These four brand values resonate with investors and are based on what people should expect from their local and district municipalities. We work hard and smart to deliver consistently. We are happy that each of the highlights tabled at the Budget Speech have elements of our brand’s promise”.
