Weskus Distrik’s Executive Mayor Ald RW “Boffie” Strydom congratulates the team’s performance in achieving its 14th consecutive audit and relates how this performance supports its developing ‘circles’ philosophy.
Richard Branson has a theory about circles. Start by drawing a circle around yourself and your family. Once you are confident in yourself and those close to you, widen the circle and start thinking about the bigger picture and do all that you can to help others.
How does this relate to Weskus Distrik’s clean audit record?
“We will never take our performance for granted and there is always room for improvement, but our sustained performance means that we are confident in our ability to deliver our mandate. It would be comfortable to sit back and think ‘job well done’ in our immediate Moorreesburg circle, but when you consider the challenges facing South Africa’s under-performing municipalities, smugness would be selfish and insensitive. We now need to reach out to others and wherever possible, help them”.
Weskus Distrik’s ‘wider circle’ approach was evident when they initiated the recent ‘Weskus Conversations’ conference, where the political and administrative arms – to our knowledge, unprecedented – of the five local municipalities gathered to address challenges facing the region. It must be said that the participating municipalities also enjoy excellent audit statuses but even so, working closer on emerging challenges can only be beneficial for the wider region’s communities.
Another ‘wider circle’ initiative is on the close horizon. Early next year, the Wavemaker Summit will take leaders from the private and public sectors on a voyage – free from the constraints of their desks – to seek fresh answers to old questions facing local government.
“These initiatives are unprecedented, but you simply cannot find effective solutions by restricting yourself to your immediate circle or having conversations about conversations which all lead to the same answers, or no solutions. When you step outside of your circle, you step into new territory.”
“Ships were never built for the safety of harbours; they must find new horizons and widen the circle”.
