Singapore is an early mover in local government Smart City technology and while Weskus Distrik Municipality is not directly comparable in many respects, Singapore’s blueprint provides some valuable lessons which CFO Dr Johan Tesselaar expands on.
“The first insight is that a smart city is obviously technology-driven but it is about integrating several spheres of urban and municipal life to improve a community’s experiences, sustainability, and economic growth. Singapore has embraced this philosophy, making strategic investments in cutting-edge technologies and fostering a culture of innovation”.
Two examples of Singapore’s smart city success stories represent one of many because practically any area where data can be captured and harnessed can lead to increased production, greater effectiveness, optimal processes and improved communication in a region.
Resident mobility
Singapore’s Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system is an excellent example of how smart infrastructure can transform transportation. Equipped with real-time data analysis, predictive maintenance, and smart fare collection systems, the MRT ensures efficient and seamless commutes for its citizens.
Sustainability through multifunctionality.
Singapore’s drive to sustainability includes the Marina Barrage, a dam that provides water supply, flood control, and a freshwater reservoir. This multifunctional masterpiece prioritises sustainable water management while integrating solar energy generation, promoting renewable energy.
“One often hears of a ‘smart city revolution’ but in truth, it’s more about evolution. Smart city technology takes us to where all good municipal leaders have always wanted to be, and that is having relevant and accurate real-time data for decision making, whether that’s for long-term planning or managing a situation unfolding but not immediately apparent. A ‘revolution’ also suggests fast and almost overnight change. Complete smart city fulfilment is not an overnight occurrence. Singapore took its first steps in 2014. One must therefore prioritise applications which yield early wins, lessons learned, and address pressing needs”, says Dr Tesselaar.
