Weskus Distrik’s Interns receive comprehensive exposure, not only to life in the public sector but to real, everyday pressures in the workplace.
During my internship, I was exposed to various functional areas within the Strategic Services department. These included participation in Integrated Development Plan (IDP) meetings, where I met IDP managers from local municipalities. I gained insight into the purpose of these meetings and assisted with editing the 2022–2027 IDP document, which helped me understand the IDP process better.
I supported tasks related to Performance Contracts for Directors and the Municipal Manager, ensuring they were signed and correctly completed. I also participated in meetings and forums, many of which were held online via MS Teams. I helped organize these meetings, set up agendas, recorded sessions, took notes, and prepared minutes and action items—all skills I now use regularly.
I was involved in Economic Development (ED) activities. I was introduced to DEDAT and attended meetings such as the successful Export Seminar and the REDS Forum, where interns helped with coordination and note distribution. These activities gave me a broad overview of the department’s operations and responsibilities.
What I learned
- The importance of planning and collaboration between municipalities and the Western Cape Government.
- Compiling official documents and reports in a professional way, and basic abilities in data collection and administrative support.
- Communication skills through phone calls and daily email correspondence.
- Deeper understanding of the IDP document and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), and how municipal staff are evaluated.
- Broader functions of municipalities, including the Disaster Management Centre, EMS, and call centre operations.
- Computer skills improved significantly, and I learned how a municipal office operates and how to work effectively in such an environment.
Area Improved
- Improved time management by completing tasks within deadlines and prioritizing assignments.
- Understanding of municipal processes, especially within a district municipality.
- Technical writing, computer skills, and research abilities also improved.
Highlights and Challenges
- Contributing to the 2025/26 IDP review, networking with stakeholders via email and in-person interactions, and gaining practical experience with KPI systems.
- Appreciated the mentorship and support from colleagues and improved my monthly report writing.
- Challenges included adjusting to the pace and complexity of municipal processes, limited exposure to some technical areas due to time constraints, and difficulties using ClickUp.
Further Development Needed
- Technical aspects of Performance Monitoring and Evaluation (PMS) and understand of PMS and IGR.
- More exposure to software and systems used such as Ignite and office supply management.
- ClickUp remains a challenge, and I require more time on this.
Conclusion
I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of the team and look forward to growing further. I would appreciate more involvement in practical projects and strategic planning tasks to develop my skills. Additional exposure to specific areas will help me contribute more effectively to the department and strengthen my career path.
