The launch of the WAVEMAKER SUMMIT has attracted enthused interest as Weskus Distrik takes the initiative in facilitating a forum to find new answers to old questions in local government and identify new questions which need answers. Weskus Distrik’s Executive Mayor Ald. Boffie Strydom sketches the purpose of the summit.
Why has Weskus initiated this summit?
Change must start somewhere, and when it’s urgently needed one must act decisively. The time for talking is long gone.
We are one of South Africa’s top performing municipalities with 13 consecutive clean audits. It would be easy to keep our heads down and simply observe other failing municipalities.
However, although we are proudly Weskus we are primarily South Africans, and it would be insensitive to the needs of others if we ignored the opportunity to make a difference in our country.
What do you hope to accomplish?
Not only hope for a better South Africa, but the realisation that if we work together, we can achieve so much more. There are a handful of outstanding municipalities in South Africa, and others can – and should – learn from them and be inspired to improve.
Sometimes it takes just one conversation to change everything, and we’re confident that delegates will have many meaningful conversations. If each of the 500 delegates leaves with just one positive change in mind and implements it, even with the help of Weskus Distrik, South Africa will take a huge step forward.
