Extortion. Forming a phalanx.

With extortion criminality attracting increased attention, Weskus Distrik Municipal Manager David Joubert discusses how municipalities are preparing for these criminal attacks. Extortion not only puts the lives of municipal employees at risk but also delays important projects which has a direct impact on service delivery.

“We all have a role to play in combatting this criminal scourge, and the community can help by reporting incidents of corruption, intimidation and blackmail while remaining anonymous.

“Municipalities will need to collaborate by sharing information and developing data to gather intelligence and pre-empt criminal activities, and act early. Some of the larger municipalities have learned lessons over the years and are responding to extortion effectively, and we need to tap into that experience.

“Internally, municipalities cannot slip when it comes to compliance, governance and oversight. Our processes must be watertight. Sadly, good everyday people just doing their jobs exceptionally well are now on the frontline, and we must acknowledge their courage, and ensure that we can protect them as best we can.

“Working closely with community protection agencies, SAPS, prosecuting authorities and vulnerable contractors is essential. The shared experiences and resources of all players can create a phalanx against extortion, a committed body of dedicated parties standing and moving in close formation. We simply must work together.

This is a fight which we must win”.
