What was your first job?
A financial clerk at Boland Bank.
Do anything special with your first salary? Difficult to recall, but those days we worked “klein Saterdag” meaning half day work on Wednesdays. I assume that myself and Amy (then girlfriend) utilised some of the first salary to visit Hermanus beach, and I further assume that I bought a scale model car (Matchbox Models of Yesterday).
Looking back to those early days, what do you wish somebody had told you? To be more innovative and forward thinking – potentially considering a Legal Career (being Local Government Advocate)
What book had the most profound effect on you? Why? “Reinventing Government” by David Osborne & Ted Gaebler.
The book provided me with vision, realising the following:
- Further studies to equip myself better
- The understanding that government cannot continue with “old ways” and that private sector must play an enormous role in government, or alternatively local government must adopt private sector principles.
If you could give hope to South Africans by fixing one thing, what would that be? Working together – I inherently believe in the Team. If we can establish “Team South Africa” working together as one we will fix our beloved country.
